Get ready to be amazed by the African Spear plant, also known as Sansevieria cylindrica (Dracaena angolensis), one of the snake plant varieties and a vibrant member of the Sansevieria genus! It has many other common names, including cylindrical sansevieria, the cylindrical snake plant, the Starfish sansevieria, the bow-string hemp, dragon fingers, and pencil Sansevieria.

This snake plant does not have ordinary upright, dark-green leaves; they are horizontally striped and have an extraordinary cylindrical fan shape that tapers to a fine point at its tips. The single leaf of this spear sansevieria can grow up to 7 feet tall and up to 1.4 inches wide.

In the right conditions, these extraordinary Sansevieria plants might surprise you with a small creamy-white flower spike shooting up from their center. While the cylindrical snake plant flower is not the largest or most colorful among its succulent family, it does have a distinct, sweet-smelling, and pleasing fragrance. These delicate white blooms dance in the air like tiny fairies spreading joy and enchantment everywhere they go. It's simply magical!

Remember, these cylindrical snake plants are mildly toxic for humans and pets, so, it's important to keep them away from children and pets. It is the simplest way to multiply and propagate Sansevieria cylindrica plants. You can either adopt the division or the leaf-cuttings method of Sansevieria cylindrica propagation. While this slow-growing succulent is known to live longer than most other succulents provided it is kept in a warm and well-lit position.

Watering Needs

Native to Africa, the African spear succulent plant doesn't need much water to thrive. In fact, it's best to water the Sansevieria cylindrica plant only when the soil is completely dry, which can be once every two to three weeks. When you do water your Sansevieria plants, be sure to do so thoroughly, allowing the water to soak into the soil. Be careful not to overwater it, as this can cause root rot, which can be fatal to the plant.

But come wintertime (dormant period), you can cut back to every two weeks or less. And get this - any type of water (except hard water) will work just fine! So, whether you use tap or filtered, or even rainwater, your cylindrical snake plant will thrive in no time. Just remember to avoid hard water since this African spear plant doesn't like lime very much.

Light Requirements

The African spear plant, or Sansevieria cylindrica survives in bright full sunlight but can also tolerate low light conditions. It's best to avoid direct afternoon sunlight, as this can burn the leaves.

If you're growing the African spear indoors, place it near a north-facing window that gets plenty of bright, indirect light. If you're growing it outdoors, be sure to provide it with some shade during the hottest part of the day. Without enough light, photosynthesis rates drop, leaves become thin, colors appear dull, there is an unhealthy look to the plant, and growth is stunted.

Optimal Soil Needs

The Sansevieria cylindrica prefers soil that's well-drained and rich in organic matter. A good potting mix for this African spear should be a combination of peat moss, perlite, and sand. You can also add some compost or aged manure to the soil to provide additional nutrients. Planet Desert has got your back with our specialized succulent potting mix that includes 5 natural substrates with organic mycorrhizae perfect for promoting healthy roots and happy plants.

When it comes to fertilizing this Sansevieria, it's best to use a slow-release fertilizer that's high in nitrogen. You can fertilize the plant once a year during the growing season, which is typically from spring to fall. Avoid over-fertilization as it can lead to the death of your stunning succulent.

Hardiness Zone & More

Typically grown in hot, arid desert regions, the Sansevieria cylindrica thrives indoors in warm, dry surroundings. If you live in USDA regions 9 to 11, you can also grow these Sansevieria plants outdoors year-round, but they are not cold- or frost-tolerant, so you should plant them indoors or put them in a pot and move them indoors during the winter if you live outside of these regions.

Keep your African spear plants away from cold, drafty windows and air vents if you are growing them indoors in a cold climate.

We think you will love this Sansevieria plant order your very own Sansevieria cylindrica - African spear or cylindrical snake plant today and start enjoying its beauty in no time!

Pleasantly surprised.

Based on the price I wasn't expecting much but boy was I wrong. I'm so impressed and thrilled with this purchase. I have a long haired Maine Coon and it picked up so much fur. It picked up thread, small pieces of yarn and feathers from my pillows. I watched the long front brushes pull dust and dirt out from under spaces that my regular vacuum would never get without moving things. I have carpet, hardwood, throw rugs and even a long shag throw by my bed that it maneuvered over mostly easily. I helped it over one or two transitions but it never got stuck. Just turned and kept going. The mop worked great. Only concern is that it only uses water so it's not a deep clean but the pad was dirty and once it dried I threw it into the wash. Definitely will use it in between a deeper cleans making cleaning a whole lot easier. With a cat shredding the carpet on a scratching post and all of his fur I was shocked how packed the dirt cup was and how great the house looked with all the little bits of scratching pole, oh yeah and card board scratching pad cleaned up so easily. I highly recommend. The cat thinks it's a cat toy so he kept starting it up. I had to cover it to protect it from the cat. It now lives under it's very own plastic bin. 🙂

My first experience with a Robot vacuum
Color: White
I am liking this robot vacuum. It is very easy to program and can be done from your phone. It has mapping capabilities which helps with learning the room. The remote is easy to use too. It picks up most dust particles and pet fur from rugs and bare floors. It has a wet floor mopping pad which is so helpful. Surprisingly it picks up more than you think. The dust cup holds quite a bit before you have to empty it. The little side brushes help with collecting the particles. It can go under some furniture and along the walls. You have several floor patterns that it can be programmed for. It is very quiet too. Recharging doesn’t take long either. It can even be programmed to vacuum while you are away. Instructions are downloaded through the app. My cats are very curious about how it moves about the rooms. So much fun to watch them. I really got a great bargain for this robot vacuum on Amazon. (I found that if you have clutter on the floors or cords under furniture you should remove and secure them before vacuuming.) It will find a way to go from floor to area rugs once it maps out the area. I am still learning the functions in the app👍🏾👍🏾😃

Piece of junk
Color: White
So many problems with this device. I have a one bedroom apartment with one bathroom and no carpet so it's all hardwood floor. You would think this device would be able to vacuum the entire place without problems right? I think it intentionally looks for places to get stuck. For instance I have electrical plugs underneath my desk pushed against the wall, and somehow it managed to get stuck in them. So I had to block that area with a box. Then it got stuck going over my bath mats. So when I vacuum I have to put them into the shower. Then somehow it managed to get stuck in a little area by the island in my kitchen. So I had to put a roll of paper towels there so it wouldn't go into that area. Then it got stuck under the wheels of my desk chair. So I had to block that area. One night, even though there's a big table on the side of my couch to block it, it figured out a way to get behind my couch and then stopped. It took me two days to find it. And that's the other thing. it doesn't have enough power to clean an entire one bedroom apartment. So even if it doesn't get stuck, I will find it in the middle of the floor with the battery drained. When I watched it I noticed that it will bang something and then it'll keep banging it a few times before moving on. And by moving on I mean it'll move 6 in and bang there a few times before moving on again. That's probably how it got stuck under the island. It couldn't fit the first time, so it kept pushing until finally it got jammed in there. I must say, however, it is amusing when it bangs into my foot and doesn't give up and tries to climb over my foot. So although I bought this thing the end of November, I was in the hospital and wasn't able to start using it until the third week in January. After a couple of weeks I wanted to return it, but unfortunately I can't, because the window to return it ended January 31st.

Not too shabby
Color: White
I was skeptical but I read the reviews before purchasing. I had a $500 Roomba previously that worked six months then died. Using the warranty on those is almost impossible. So I took a chance. Cons: will fling itself down ledges and stairs. Like any robot cleaner, hates cords and plastic bags. Gets stuck now and then. You need to rinse out dust filter each time. Pros: runs a LONG time. Picks up all the dust and hair my Roomba did. Much cheaper. Has an app that you can supposedly program. Not too noisy. Beeps if it needs help. Charges well. Cats dig it. All in all I would buy one again. Robot vacuums are not for grime, they are for dust, hair, bits of cat litter. Keep that in mind. But in keeping your floor free of cords and debris that might trip it up, it helps you to be tidier overall.
